Bark for Schools
-
Bark for Schools is a CIPA and COPPA compliant monitoring tool used to protect over 5.2 million students across the United States.
Cuero ISD has chosen to use Bark for Schools Monitoring and Filtering Services to:
- Help protect students against harmful and inappropriate online material
- Help students stay "scholarly" and more focused when learning online
Although Bark will monitor student's devices both during school and after school, our protocol outside of school hours (M-F 3pm-8am, weekends, and school breaks) is as follows:
- Bark monitors school-issued devices and sends an alert to Cuero Technology Department. Technology will then notify Administration.
-
Campus administration will then attempt to make contact with the family and student.
- If the student and family cannot be reached, law enforcement will be notified in order to ensure the student's safety.
-
When and how does Bark for Schools operate?
Bark’s web-based services operate on our school’s managed G Suite for Education Chrome accounts (i.e. when a student is logged into Chrome or a Chromebook with his/her school email address).
Cuero ISD uses Bark for Schools to help protect your student during the school day and beyond by:
- monitoring Google products (mail, docs, etc...) for signs of potentially harmful issues (cyberbullying, threats, etc.)
- blocking inappropriate videos, images, sites, and more
In the event that a student accesses material that is deemed harmful or inappropriate, school counselors and/or administrators can be notified and will work with the student/parent to review/resolve the issue when necessary.
Bark for Schools also allows parents to play an active role in monitoring online activity through a secure Parent Portal.

What are my parental/guardian and child's responsibilities?
We ask that students use their school-managed Google accounts and school-managed devices for educational purposes within the guidelines set forth in the district Student Code of Conduct.
When a student is off-campus, parents/guardians are responsible for supervising internet access and usage. When a student is off-campus, especially after-hours, parents/guardians are responsible for supervising internet access and usage. After-hours is defined as 3:00 pm to 8:00 am Monday through Friday, weekends, holidays and school breaks.
We encourage you to discuss rules for appropriate internet usage with your student and to reinforce lessons of digital citizenship and safety with him or her. We also highly encourage you to report any potential cyberbullying or other sensitive issues to your student's campus administrators.
Parents are also encouraged to sign up for the Bark for Schools Parent Portal to help monitor their student's online activity outside of school hours.

How does Bark for Schools help protect my child's privacy?

What is the Bark for Schools Parent Portal? How do I get access?
The Bark for Schools Parent Portal is a free service parents/guardians can sign up for that will allow them to help monitor student internet activity outside of school hours (M-F 3pm-8am, weekends, and school breaks). For more information on the Parent Portal, please go here.
Through the Parent Portal, parents/guardians can receive alerts when student activity on monitored products is flagged for one or more key elements:
- depression
- cyberbullying
- sexual content
- suicidal ideation
- and more
Along with a snippet of the flagged activity, Bark for Schools provides parents/guardians links to resources on how to talk with their student on the flagged topic. As privacy and security are essential, Bark will not share the names of any other student involved as a participant in a flagged item. The only exception would be if a student's name was actually listed in the body of the item (i.e. in an email message or in a Google Doc).
